Helping a child learn English at home without turning it into homework

Twenty minutes of the right kind of English at home beats an hour of the wrong kind. What that looks like in practice.

Parents often ask what they should be doing at home, and worry that they need good English themselves to help. They do not. What helps most has almost nothing to do with your own level.

The first thing is repetition of something your child already enjoys. The same cartoon episode watched four times in English does more than four different episodes, because the second viewing is where the language stops being noise and starts being words.

The second is talking about what they did in the lesson, in whatever language you share. Recalling a lesson in Kazakh or Russian still strengthens the memory of the English that was in it.

The third is keeping it under twenty minutes. A child who is bored at minute twenty five learns nothing and starts associating English with being bored, which is expensive to undo.

What does not help is correcting every mistake at home. Correction is the teacher's job, and a child who gets corrected by a parent mid sentence stops volunteering sentences at all.

If you want a specific plan for your child, ask in the trial lesson. We will send one after the placement, based on what they actually like.
